Resveratrol: Is it A Wonder Drug?

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring substance, its a polyphenolic compound with anti-oxidant properties produced in plants like grapes and blueberries with the Muscadine grape leading them all with the highest concentration at 40 mg per liter as opposed to 2-12 mg in others. They are also found in peanuts and in about 70 other plant species. They are naturally produced in these plants when under attack from pathogens like fungus and bacteria as a form of self-preservation.

Interestingly enough, the pathogens that prompt their production also attack humans and because Resveratrol is not produced by the human body, their ingestion as a food supplement has been shown to benefit us in more ways than we could imagine.

Years of research behind Resveratrol have revealed several promising heath benefits that make it the wonder drug of the century. As an antioxidant, it helps break down the fats stored in the white adipose tissue of our body so they get metabolized by the liver.

This accounts for the French living healthier and longer lives despite all the fats they eat, because of all the red wine they drink. Red Wine contains resveratrol. Resveratrol also exhibits contradictory benefits of preventing cancer by killing cancerous cells while protecting the heart by preventing cell damage.

The research findings point to its dual role in maintaining a healthy heart and blood circulation with low doses, while counteracting tumor cell growth in larges doses. As a result, Resveratrol not only has health promoting, medicinal properties, it also may potentially prolong life. It supposedly has strong anti-aging properties.
