Does art have rules or does anything go in the world of art

jewlery

Karen Rosenberg from the Times is calling the jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels at the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York, distasteful and an embarrassment for the museum.

Now, lets take a look at the jewelry pieces on display at the museum, I don’t think I would go as far to say it’s a disgrace and embarrassment. The exhibit consists of 350 glittering chunks of diamonds. Rosenberg said "Extravagance isn’t the nauseous part; staggering displays of wealth don’t look out of place in this former Carnegie mansion.”

It seems she was upset because she believed the exhibit was basically a promotional show of huge glittering advertisement and not true art.

At the end of the day isn’t every display of any kind of art a promotional show? I don’t see anything wrong with the exhibit. The beauty of art is anything can be art so I don’t agree much with calling the exhibit a disgrace to the museum besides big chunky diamonds are pretty fun to gawk at all day.

Do you think the jewelry was a disgrace or does anything count in the art world?
