My Career as Brand Relations

Written by  Virginia Alexander 29 June 2011

I am a very basic person; I am an extremely diligent worker who thinks out of the box, and can practically make something out of nothing. In saying that I have created an amazing career. For over 25 years I have actively worked in some aspect of Film & Television. It’s an industry that is flexible to a point and challenging, plus makes me think on my feet. I have been interviewed for assorted aspects within the Film & TV industry, people think what I do is fascinating, but they really can’t understand what I do, what’s my title? What is it that I do on a daily basis? How did I get started with this industry, career? Unless you’re fully involved in the Film & Television industry you can’t understand. It’s not a career that has a “title”; it is multi facetted, multi dimensional that has no real limits.

Follow along as I explain my journey to where I am now, I started in 1982 as a Hair stylist. Working in a salon, then taking a professional Makeup course to be able to do Film & Television, I wizzed through the course and within weeks was teaching it. My first shoot was doing hair & makeup, working with a photographer in Fort Lauderdale Florida, I did a head shot. Did some “time” with photographers but didn’t enjoy print.
Then I got a call from a Television Production company that was opening in Fort Lauderdale, I went on my first gig, Eureka! I found what I loved, every aspect, from the lighting, to the scripts. This is where my real passion and career was born. Nite Lite Studios. They did all kinds of commercials mostly what is called DR. Direct Response, fast paced products to market, commercials, infomercials and products for Shopping channels. I loved seeing the branding of a new product, some were amazing, but this was only the start of this type of Shopping……..I met inventors, manufactures, prototype makers, and graphic artists. Art Directors, Producers and Directors, along with every type of Talent that could be. A world like no other, I still adore it today.

As career’s progress and Florida being a right to work state, I was asked by the powers to be at the studio if I could do assorted projects before the main shoot where I would be doing the hair & makeup. Loved it.
Thus I moved into the position of Coordinating producer, Simply put, that’s the person who is extremely organized and gets anything that is asked for ready for the shoot. The Studio started to grow by leaps and bounds, there were over 100 producers coming in from all over the country and world, shooting at Nite Lite, I was called to work with them, thus I probably worked 300 out of 360 days a year.

I Understanding Direct Response and the term Direct to Retail, which simply means taking the first steps to launch a product, via TV, commercial, infomercials or placement in a TV series, movie or event. Then getting that product in stores and assorted shopping sources. Being exposed to products and formats, I learned the industry. It’s Branding & Product Placement. I will never give up makeup in totality, I love teaching new artists and others that want to excel in their career. But my extreme passion is bringing to out & getting recognition for Exceptional Fashion & Beauty Brands. Making the world more beautiful, one woman at a time. I’m happy with that. What’s your passion?
