64th Cannes Film Festival Fashion

Written by  31 May 2011

This year the 64th Cannes Film Festival had an abundance of fashion related events. The heart of Japan still holds strong after the devastation left behind from a tsunami and earthquake there. Naomi Campbell’s Fashion for Relief for Japan auction brought in a number of top players. She of course was on the catwalk as was Jane Fonda and actress Rosario Dawson. Victoria Secrets model Karolina Kurkova, Victoria Silvstedt, Robert De Niro’s wife Grace Hightower, actress Afef Jnifern and Yasmin Le Bon sashayed across the stage.

The designers on stage were a mix of couture clothing from Chanel, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Marchesa, Lanvin, Prada, Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent. Top male model Marcus Schenkenberg, Actor Luke Evans and former Formula 1 racecar driver Jean Alesi represented the male models. UK TV presenter Bruce Forsyth and his wife Wilnelia walked the runway. Model Ai Tominaga got cries from the audience. Serbian tennis pro Novak Djokovic walked the show and later one of his tennis rackets were auctioned off. Also on the auction block were painting from artists: Jeff Koons, Richard Prince, and Julian Schnabel. Chopard made a special diamond rabbit necklace just for this occasion. Vogue Japan’s Anna Dello Russo walked the red carpet. In the audience was Emilio Pucci’s Peter Dundas, Ivana Trump with her classic blonde up-do hairstyle, Denise Rich, Italian Fashion designer Roberto Cavalli and his wife Eva, Harvey Weinstein and his fashion designer wife Georgina. Vogue Italia’s Franca Sozzani also attended and supported this event.

California designer Ashley Paige held a swimsuit fashion show on a rooftop where Nikki Beach club set up a swank poolside lounge. Planet Fashion TV’s Celia Evans helped organized this event. The paparazzi were quite the shutterbugs. The champagne was flowing and the evening had a cool breeze in the air. The swimsuits were cut in an asymmetrical design. Many celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Fergie, Gwen Stefani, Kate Hudson, and Jessica Alba wear Ashley Paige.

The highlight of the fashion at the festival was the 40th Anniversary of Italian designer Roberto Cavalli. He opened a star-studded boutique on the Croisette. Again many top models were on hand wearing his designs. Bar Refaeli, Rosario Dawson, and Elisabetta Canalis glittered in his gowns. I was invited to his purple mega yacht for the after party. His yacht is decorated with Murano glass chandeliers; tiger and zebra print throw pillow. True to classic Cavalli style. I also attended the Fashion TV Most Liked Model’s Awards show at the Majestic Barriere Hotel across the street from the Palais. The award show was outside along the swimming pool.  It will also be held every season in every fashion capital in the world such as New York, London, Paris and Milan.

Cinema Against AIDS to benefit AmFar was the hottest ticket in town. The event was held at Hotel Eden Roc in Cap d’Antibes just outside Cannes. The Red Carpet gowns were a fashion show in itself. The Cannes Film Festival’s toast to fashion is just as much fun as attending the screenings for the films.  Ahhh and already there is so much to look forward to next May.
