New York Fashion Week kicked off with the Kanye West presentation consisting of an outdoor showing of his Yeezy Season 4 line. Chanel Iman, “Fade” video star Teyana Taylor, and Sophia Ritchie (Lionel Ritchie’s daughter and Justin Bieber date) were some of the models that were featured. The event was criticized as most of the women on his runway were forced to stand for hours in sweltering heat at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island. It was uncomfortable to watch as some models eventually collapsed, while others resorted to sitting on the grass instead of standing in the grid formation that was planned. An audience member coming to the assistance of one model who fell down walking, while another model kicked off her shoes. Nonetheless it was creative, as Kanye West productions are.

Former Spice Girls singer Victoria Beckham debuted her latest Sunday after taking a moment of silence to recognize the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Designs featured traditional fabrics like velvet, lace and satin, balanced with new colors like a bright peppermint and a bold orange. Also new: a lightweight summer boot
“I really feel I’ve come into my own with this season, I really do,” Beckham said. “It’s a lot about fabric development — I’m doing a lot of really exciting things in-house.

Tom Ford’s return to the to New York runway scene for the first time in six years was extremely cool. This was probably the hottest ticket in town during fashion week. The designer treated fans to a live-stream and the event was of course filled with celebrities. Julianne Moore, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and many more A-listers gathered around dining tables for food and fashion. What better way to please people than to feed them!

Oscar de la Renta’s Spring 2017 runway show previewed the debut collection from new creative directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia. Models wore flat sandals instead of heels. Highlights included a multi-colored paisley print, a white silk faille gown with champagne threadwork and gold beading, some feathered gowns and two cayenne-colored silk dresses.

Christian Siriano made headlines when he cast five plus-size models in his show, a first for the designer at New York Fashion week following a headline-making summer with his limited edition Lane Bryant collection and dressing the likes of first lady Michelle Obama. Models Georgia Pratt and Precious Lee were among the “curvy women,” as Siriano puts it, wearing his Capri-inspired designs.

Jonathan Saunders, the newly chief creative officer at DVF, departed slightly from Diane von Furstenberg’s iconic looks with bold colors, patterns and mixed textures. Romantic florals paired with playful polka dots, and metallic dresses were adorned with fur wraps.
“I wanted the collection to be kind of this melting pot,” Saunders explained. “Eclectic mixtures of different prints from different places and times brought together in one collection. I thought that was kind of an exciting way to start.”

Closing out the week in typical headliner fashion were Ralph Lauren and Marc Jacobs.
In a brilliant move, Ralph Lauren literally stopped traffic, shutting down a block of Madison Avenue so models could turn the sidewalk into a runway. Immediately after, customers could buy anything from the see-now/buy-now collection in the brand’s flagship store in an Upper East Side mansion. Its amazing how fast fashion is moving.
Not to be outdone, Jacobs had all the hot models from Kendall Jenner, Bella and Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, as well as Adriana Lima, Irina Shayk and Jourdan Dunn. The girls all wore multi-colored dreadlock wigs from Etsy. The look – inspired by director Lana Wachowski, who appeared in Jacobs’ 2016 Spring/Summer campaign – required over 12,500 yards of hand-dyed yarned.
Celebrities made appearances too (besides at Tom Ford). Taylor Swift, Yolanda Foster, Louis Hamilton, Ashley Graham and Malin Akerman could be seen in the front row at several runway shows.
