new-york-fashion-week

By Kelly A. Jack

Every spring, the women of New York leave the foolish choices of their past behind and look forward to the future. This is known as Fashion Week.” –Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and The City 2008

New York has always represented, culturally the mecca, the place of fashion dreams. Diverse and authentic, fashion week was founded by visionary Fern Mallis in 1993, as a way to organize, modernize and shine a spotlight on American fashion and designers. Not to mention catapult the city of dreams into the competitive market with the French and Italian designers in the world of fashion. Since its inception, NYFW has set the pace for American women everywhere and the fall 2015 collections were no exceptions. The return of the elongated silhouette, essential coats and jackets, faux fur & fringe all dominated the catwalk. Color palettes consisted mostly of muted fall colors, black & white combos with splashes of some Pantone’s top hues, Marsala, Amethyst Orchid and Biscay Bay.

The task of each designer is to create with a specific muse in mind. These are my interpretations.

The Uptown Girl

The epitome of an “It” girl, the modern muse, the Serena Van Der Woodson to your Blair Waldorf. Or Daisy Buchanan from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s most famous novel, The Great Gatsby. A glamorous, no rules following trendsetter, and street style superstar. Donna Karan, Christian Siriano, Adam Lippes and Tracey Reese runway presentations all represented this girl. Lush, vibrant colors and textures, feminine silhouettes and readily wearable clothes that transform from day to night.

The Boho Chic Princess

The effortless, chic slaying goddess in your life who can easily glide from Parisian haute couture to minimalism and has mastered the art of the masculine/ feminine look. Insert the chameleon Kate Moss or Sienna Miller. Alice + Olivia, Costello Tagliapietra, Charlotte Ronson and Bibhu Mohapatra showcased nonconventional fabrics, clean lines yet at times ambiguous silhouettes and twists on classic color combinations.

The Urban Socialite

Dramatic, bold and eclectic, this beauty’s style knows no boundaries. She revels in every bit of attention she gets and dresses for the occasion. A social media maven, type A personality and a style inspiration on Instagram. Picture the ladies Jennifer Lopez and Chrissy Teigan. Jason Wu, J Mendel, Marc Jacobs and Altuzarra have this lady on lock. Sensual peek-a-boo lace, plunging necklines, leather, and thigh slits show the socialite isn’t afraid to show off her sex appeal.

The Leading Lady

Old world glamour meets modern conceptualism. Polished. Aristocratic feel. Imagine Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s or the dame Cate Blanchett. Opulence divine, heavily ornamented, jewel encrusted details with extravagant fabrics in soft hues. Badgley Mischka, Elie Tahari, Jenny Packham and Marchesa perfectly portray the leading lady, whether she is dining on 5th Avenue or jet setting to Dubai.
