Known for her tasteful and highly detailed bridal dresses (with a line launched in New York in 1997, and wedding dresses made for LeAnn Rimes and Christina Applegate), Lebanese-born designer Reem Acra has since ventured into ready-to-wear and evening gown territory, cultivating a following that includes such celebs as Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie, Kate Hudson, and Madonna (who rocked an impressively elaborate, silver-and-black Acra gown at the 2012 Golden Globes).
It’s no wonder Acra has had several celebrities showing off her creations on the red carpet since she often designs new outfits with particular boldfaced names in mind. As she has told People magazine, “When I’m draping, I think, ‘This is perfect for Angelina Jolie,’ then I do send a picture. Or I’ll make something that is a perfect color for, say, Miley Cyrus, and why not send her a picture to tell her what I’m up to?”
With her non-bridal collections, Acra’s creativity reigns supreme, revealing acute sensibilities that combine traditional glamor, judicious flights of fancy, and a hint of Middle Eastern ornamentation. Case in point: her new Pre-Fall 2014 line. Color-wise, she unabashedly goes bold, offering shiny purples and greens, scarlet reds, and metallic blues. Using silk, taffeta, and lace, all her designs evince a chic, yet whimsical approach, as though she’s dreamweaving a high fashion fairy tale. There’s a sense of youth here too, with one black sleeveless dress featuring a see-through tulle skirt fit for a rock ‘n’ roll prom, while others could very well exude a Cinderella-on-acid aesthetic. We totally dig.
