Balmain, released a pre fall collection that was everything a real fashionista would want. It was super editorial, technical, over the top chic but whimsical too.
It was supposed to be “Miami inspired” which of course we love, as we’re based in Miami. Yet I don’t really see Miami in this collection. It looks more Grace Jones or David Bowie throw back. It’s funny because when people say ” Miami Inspired” it’s always random. Miami can mean many things to many people. As a new city ( compared to Paris or New York), people that don’t live here tend to think of Miami Vice pastels or Latin culture or endless parties on South Beach. None of that actually reflects the current tone of the city which is decidedly financial, high luxury, and the global center for Fine Art. Anyway last year Pierre Balmain’s Elba villa by architect Leonardo Ricci was the subject of a house activation at Art Basel Miami. The collection nods to this and also references a harlequin meets Cuba collection from the Balmain spring 2013.
“This is a real Balmain collection, There are some where I go away from the aesthetic of the house, and there are some when I go full on. This one is full on! There’s a lot of joy and a lot of confidence. And in a moment when there is apparently a lot of quiet luxury happening, we should not forget that maybe not everybody only wants a camel cashmere turtleneck.”said Olivier Rousteing, the creative director.
